Filters

All filters

A filter is one condition that each track in your Liked Songs either matches or does not. A smart playlist is the set of liked tracks that match every filter on it, and Playlistation keeps that set up to date as you like and unlike music. Each filter reads one thing about a track: who performs it, when you liked it, how long it is, how energetic it sounds. You can also put filters in an "or" group so that a track only needs to match one of them; see Combining filters.

Nine filters are available on every plan; the nine others need the Plus or Pro plan and show a star in the filter picker on the Free plan. The comparison table below shows all 18 side by side: what each one reads, its operators, its plan and its default value.

Basic filters (every plan)

  • Artist: keep or drop tracks by the artists credited on them.
  • Artist genre: keep or drop tracks by the genres Spotify puts on their artists.
  • Artist popularity: keep tracks whose artist scores in a range of Spotify's 0 to 100 popularity.
  • Artist followers: keep tracks whose artist has at least, or at most, a number of Spotify followers.
  • Track popularity: keep tracks whose own popularity score sits in a range.
  • Duration: keep tracks at least, or at most, a given length.
  • Explicit content: keep only clean tracks, or only explicit ones.
  • Liked date: keep tracks by when you saved them to Liked Songs.
  • Release date: keep tracks by when their album came out.

Premium filters (Plus and Pro plans)

These read Spotify's audio analysis or the language of the lyrics. A playlist takes up to 3 filters on the Free plan, 30 on Plus and 100 on Pro; see Combining filters.

  • Language: keep or drop tracks by the language of their lyrics.
  • Tempo (BPM): keep tracks in a range of beats per minute.
  • Energy: keep tracks by how intense and active they sound.
  • Danceability: keep tracks by how steady and danceable their rhythm is.
  • Positiveness: keep tracks by how happy or sad they sound.
  • Acousticness: keep tracks by how acoustic they sound.
  • Instrumentalness: keep tracks by how little of them is sung, from full vocals to none.
  • Liveness: keep live recordings, or keep them out.
  • Speechiness: keep tracks by how much of them is spoken rather than sung.

Comparison table

One row per filter. "Operators" lists the choices exactly as the edit dialog names them. "Default" is what a filter holds the moment you add it, before you change anything. Filters marked "Plus, Pro" need one of those plans; the others are on every plan.

Reading the table

  • Slider filters have no operator to pick. You move two handles. When the top handle sits at the maximum, the filter sentence reads "The track popularity is at least 50"; when the bottom handle sits at 0 it reads "at most"; otherwise "between". A slider left at 0 to 100 shows the warning "With the current settings, all of the tracks will match this filter".
  • The default operator matters for two filters. Duration and Artist followers open on "At least", so a freshly added Duration filter keeps tracks of 3:30 or longer, and a freshly added Artist followers filter keeps artists with 100K followers or more.
  • The Artist operator changes with the selection. With one artist the choices are "Is" and "Is not". With two or more they become "Is one of", "All of" and "None of". Adding a second artist to an "Is" filter switches it to "All of". Whatever the count, the saved sentence reads "is one of" or "is none of": "The track artist is one of Daft Punk" is a one-artist "Is" filter.
  • Every date bound is inclusive. A Custom range "Between 1 Jan 2024 and 31 Dec 2024" keeps tracks dated on either of those days. Quick picks such as "In the last 30 days" count back from the moment the playlist is updated.
  • Filters the plan does not evaluate. Premium filters on the Free plan, and any filter past the plan's count (3, 30 or 100), stay on the playlist but are ignored; see Combining filters. In the picker, a premium filter shows a star and the tooltip "This filter is only available for premium users. If you want to use it, please upgrade your plan."
  • A filter that cannot measure a track does not keep it. A track with no Spotify audio analysis never matches an audio filter. A track whose artist cannot be loaded never matches Artist popularity or Artist followers. A track whose album has no release date never matches Release date. See Troubleshooting when a track you expect is missing.
