Danceability

Needs the Plus or Pro plan. The Danceability filter keeps the tracks whose danceability score sits inside a range you set.

What it matches

Danceability is a score from 0% to 100% that estimates how suitable a track is for dancing, from its tempo, the stability of its rhythm, the strength of its beat and how regular the whole thing is. A steady beat at a comfortable speed scores high. Rubato, shifting rhythms and free-form pieces score low.

The filter compares each track's score with your range and keeps the track when the score is inside it, both ends included.

It is not the same thing as energy. A laid-back disco track can be very danceable and only moderately energetic. A blast-beat metal track is energetic and hardly danceable.

Where the data comes from

The score is part of Spotify's audio analysis of the recording. Playlistation reads it from Spotify the first time a track is checked and stores it for later updates.

Spotify has no analysis for every track. When it has none, the track has no danceability score and the filter treats it as not matching: the track stays out of the playlist whatever range you set.

Operators and values

The filter has one operator, Between, so the dialog shows no operator card. You set a minimum and a maximum on a slider with two handles, from 0% to 100%, in steps of 5. A new Danceability filter starts at 25% to 75%.

The sentence collapses at the ends of the scale:

  • Minimum at 0: "The track danceability is at most 40%".
  • Maximum at 100: "The track danceability is at least 70%".
  • Anything else: "The track danceability is between 25% and 75%".

A slider left at 0% to 100% shows the warning "With the current settings, all of the tracks will match this filter".

Examples

  • The track danceability is at least 70%. The party playlist, in the plain sense of the word.
  • The track danceability is at least 70% and The track is Clean. The same party, with the kids.
  • The track danceability is at most 40% and The track energy is at least 60%. Intense but not danceable. Post-rock, most metal, a lot of film music.
  • The track danceability is at least 60% and The track BPM is between 100 and 130. A safe default for a mixed crowd.
  • The track danceability is at least 65% and The track artist is tagged with one of funk, disco. One of those styles rather than all of them.

Things to know

  • Disco, funk, house and reggaeton fill the top of the scale. To get one style rather than all of them, add an Artist genre filter.
  • The score measures the beat, not the mood. A steady, mid-tempo sad song can score high. Pair with Positiveness if the mood matters.
  • The threshold is personal. Expand a track in the track list at the bottom of the page: "The Danceability score is 58%" tells you where the borderline songs land.
