What is a Smart Playlist?

Unlike traditional playlists you manually create and manage, smart playlists created with Playlistation are automatically updated. You create a playlist and you add filters like "The artist is X" or "The track was released in the last 30 days". The playlist is then built automatically from the tracks in your library that match those filters, and we monitor your library for any changes. If you remove a track from your library, it is removed from your smart playlists. If you add a new track, we check your smart playlists' filters and add it wherever it matches.

Why do I need this app?

The goal of this app is to save you curating playlists by hand. When you find a new track, instead of working out which playlist to add it to, just add it to your library and it is sorted automatically into the smart playlists you set up.

Is it allowed by Spotify?

Accepted Answer

Yes, of course. Spotify provides the Spotify WEB API, which lets developers build applications around Spotify. To use the "Login with Spotify" feature, apps must pass a review by the Spotify team to confirm they comply with the Spotify Developer Policy.

How secure are my Spotify login details with Playlistation?

Accepted Answer

Playlistation does not have access to your Spotify login details. To access Playlistation, you will be redirected to the Spotify website. It will ask you to allow Playlistation to manage your playlist and access your library. Once you allow it, you will be redirected to Playlistation with a token provided by Spotify. We use this token to communicate with Spotify so we never have access to your Spotify password. You can find more information in the Spotify API Documentation • Authorisation.

How often does Playlistation check my liked tracks and update my playlists?

Premium users' playlists are updated more often than free users'. If you are a premium user, changes to your library are reflected in your smart playlists within the hour. For free users, playlists are updated every 6 hours. We use the Spotify WEB API to monitor liked tracks and keep the playlists up to date. The Spotify API is rate limited, meaning there is a maximum number of requests we can make per minute. Factors like the number of Playlistation users, the size of their libraries (liked tracks) and the number of smart playlists created in Playlistation increase the number of requests needed to keep the app running. Our algorithms are built to give the best update frequency with the fewest Spotify calls possible. For example, the library of someone who likes 10 tracks a day is updated more often than that of someone who likes a track a month. We monitor rate-limiting errors and will change the update frequency if needed to keep the service reliable for every Playlistation user.

Can I manually update my smart playlists created with Playlistation?

Change the playlist image in Spotify and Playlistation picks it up on the next sync. The title is different: rename a playlist in Spotify and Playlistation keeps showing its own name, then writes that name back over yours the next time you edit the playlist here. Rename it in Playlistation instead. You cannot add or remove tracks from playlists created with Playlistation, because every time Playlistation syncs your playlist it overrides your manual changes.

Can I delete a playlist created with Playlistation?

You can delete a playlist within Playlistation. You choose between keeping the playlist on Spotify with its current list of tracks, or deleting it from both Playlistation and Spotify. You can delete the playlist directly from Spotify like every other playlist. If you do so, it will be deleted from Playlistation automatically.
