Track popularity

Available on every plan. The Track popularity filter, labeled "Popularity" in the app, keeps tracks whose own popularity score sits in a range.

What it matches

Spotify gives each track a score from 0 to 100. The filter keeps a track when its score falls between your minimum and maximum, both included.

Unlike Artist popularity, this reads the track, not the artist. A famous artist's album cuts can score low; a viral track by a newcomer can score high.

Where the data comes from

The popularity Spotify returns with each track when Playlistation reads your Liked Songs. The app describes it as "Spotify's own 0-100 ranking, driven mostly by recent plays": high is a current hit, low is a deep cut. Your Liked Songs are fetched at most once an hour, and a Pro playlist updates every 30 minutes, so a new like can take up to about an hour to show on Pro. The score is read again with each fetch, so it follows Spotify more closely than the artist-level scores do.

Operators and values

The filter has one operator, Between, so the dialog shows no operator card. You set a minimum and a maximum on a slider with two handles, from 0 to 100, in steps of 5. A new filter starts at 50 to 100.

The sentence collapses at the ends of the scale:

  • Minimum at 0: "The track popularity is at most 30".
  • Maximum at 100: "The track popularity is at least 70".
  • Anything else: "The track popularity is between 30 and 60".

Under it the app adds a plain line such as "Keeps tracks whose popularity scores 30 or below, out of 100." A slider left at 0 to 100 shows the warning "With the current settings, all of the tracks will match this filter".

Examples

  • The track popularity is at most 30. The album tracks and B-sides you liked that few people stream.
  • The track popularity is at least 70. Only the hits, for a room where every song has to be recognized.
  • The track popularity is at most 50 and The track artist popularity is at least 80. The lesser-known songs of very well-known artists.
  • The track popularity is at least 60 and Liked date: This year. This year's likes that turned out to be popular.

Things to know

  • Scores move with recent plays, so a playlist built on a range gains and loses tracks over time without you doing anything. A low-popularity playlist slowly surfaces the songs the world has moved on from.
  • If a "hits" playlist looks thin at "at least 70", lower the minimum.
  • The score belongs to the exact track you liked. If the same recording exists on several albums, each version has its own score, and the filter reads the one you saved.
