Artist popularity

Available on every plan. The Artist popularity filter keeps tracks whose artist sits in a range of Spotify's popularity score.

What it matches

Spotify gives every artist a popularity score from 0 to 100. The filter reads the score of each artist credited on the track, takes the highest one, and keeps the track when that number falls in your range. A collaboration with a very popular artist therefore counts as popular, even when the main artist is not.

This is about the artist, not the track. An obscure album cut by a very popular artist still carries a high artist popularity. For the track's own score, use Track popularity.

Where the data comes from

The popularity score on the artist's Spotify page. As the app's help text puts it: "Artist popularity is Spotify's 0-100 ranking of the artist as a whole, not of this particular track." Playlistation loads an artist's page the first time a filter needs it and keeps that copy for later updates, so the score you filter on can lag behind what Spotify shows today.

Operators and values

The filter has one operator, Between, so the dialog shows no operator card. You set a minimum and a maximum on a slider with two handles, from 0 to 100, in steps of 5. A new filter starts at 50 to 100.

The sentence collapses at the ends of the scale:

• Minimum at 0: "The track artist popularity is at most 40".
• Maximum at 100: "The track artist popularity is at least 50".
• Anything else: "The track artist popularity is between 20 and 60".

Under the sentence the app spells it out, for example "Keeps tracks whose artist popularity scores 50 or above, out of 100." A slider left at 0 to 100 shows the warning "With the current settings, all of the tracks will match this filter".

Examples

• The track artist popularity is at most 40. Artists almost nobody streams.
• The track artist popularity is at least 80 and Liked date: In the last 90 days. The big names you liked recently.
• The track artist popularity is at most 60 and The track artist is tagged with one of indie rock. Indie rock by artists who are still small.
• The track artist popularity is between 40 and 70. The middle of your library: neither stars nor unknowns.

Things to know

• The score is relative to the whole of Spotify, not to your library, so an artist who is big to you may score lower than you expect.
• A track whose artists cannot be loaded from Spotify has no score and never matches this filter.
• Follower counts and popularity measure different things. A legacy act can have millions of followers and a modest popularity score. Artist followers reads the other number.
