Release date

Available on every plan. The Release date filter keeps tracks by when they were released.

What it matches

The filter reads the release date of the album the track belongs to and keeps the track when that date falls inside a period: a rolling window such as the last 30 days, a calendar period such as this year or last year, a decade, or a custom range between two dates. The time of day is ignored.

A rolling release-date playlist is a personal release radar: every new release you like shows up, and drops out a month later.

Where the data comes from

The release date Spotify lists on the album. Some releases carry only a year, or a year and a month. Playlistation treats those as the first day of that year or month, so an album dated "1975" counts as 1 January 1975. A track whose album has no release date at all never matches this filter.

Operators and values

The dialog has two modes.

Quick pick offers: In the last 30 days, In the last 90 days, This year, Last year, then the decades: The 2020s (2020–2029), The 2010s (2010–2019), The 2000s (2000–2009), The 90s (1990–1999), The 80s (1980–1989), The 70s (1970–1979), The 60s (1960–1969), The 50s (1950–1959), The 40s (1940–1949). A new filter starts on "In the last 30 days". The sentence reads "Release date: The 80s (1980–1989)", with a line under it such as "Includes every track released between 1 Jan 1980 and 31 Dec 1989."

Custom range gives three cards, each with a calendar going back to 1900: Before ("Everything up to one date"), After ("Everything from one date onwards") and Between ("Everything between two dates"). Both bounds are included. The sentence reads "Release date: after 1 Jan 2000", "Release date: before 31 Dec 1969" or "Release date: between 1 Jan 2010 and 31 Dec 2019".

Examples

  • Release date: In the last 30 days. Fresh releases you liked this month, gone next month.
  • Release date: The 80s (1980–1989). The eighties playlist. Add an Artist genre filter if your eighties are more specific than that.
  • Release date: after 1 Jan 2000 and The track artist is tagged with one of jazz. Jazz recorded this century.
  • Release date: The 60s (1960–1969) and The track is Clean. A sixties playlist that is safe by construction.

Things to know

  • The date is the one on the album that holds the version you liked. If you liked a track from a remaster, a reissue or a compilation, the filter sees that album's date, not the original recording's. Like the original release when you can.
  • "The 2020s" is open-ended in practice: it keeps growing as new music comes out.
  • A playlist created some time ago may hold a period the list no longer offers, such as "After 2000" or "In 2023". It keeps working, and the dialog keeps it selectable until you change it.
